Tips For Your Safety During A Storm

3 min read

By being prepared and informed, you can help ensure your safety and the safety of those around you during a storm. Here’s some advice from our JN member companies to help protect you during weather events.

General Advice

  1. Follow official guidance: Heed the advice and directives from local authorities, including any evacuation orders or safety measures.
  2. Be mindful of areas prone to flooding. Avoid roadways and gullies known to experience flooding. Also, if you live in a flood-prone or low-lying area, be prepared to evacuate if conditions worsen.
  3. Have an evacuation plan. Know your evacuation routes and have a plan in place for where to go if you need to leave your home. Communicate this plan with family members.
  4. Secure important documents. As you prepare, don’t forget to secure all important documents to include your passport, birth certificate, property titles, etc. Put together and place them in a sealed plastic bag that you can easily retrieve in the event of an emergency.
  5. Stay Safe after the Storm. Wait for official clearance before venturing outside

Advice from JN Bank

  • Plan ahead: Withdraw any essential cash and complete urgent transactions before weather conditions worsen.
  • Bank safely from home: Use our JN Bank LIVE website, mobile app or JN Pay Wallet to conduct everyday transactions and monitor funds conveniently anytime, anywhere.

Merchants and businesses

  • Secure your JN Pay POS equipment: Disconnect and store devices in a safe, dry place to prevent water or power damage.
  • Stay organised: Keep detailed records of all customer transactions and ensure you have support contact details on hand.
  • After the storm: Inspect your devices carefully before reconnecting. Contact your merchant relationship officer if you notice any issues.

Advice from JN Money

  • Go digital: Use jnmoneyonline.com to send funds safely from your phone or computer.
  • Send money directly to bank accounts to ensure your loved ones receive funds quickly, even if in-person locations are affected.
  • Use your JN Money Card for quick, easy access to funds via ATMs or for shopping.

Advice from JAA

  • Give yourself time in the event of heavy traffic due to rain
  • Keep a safe distance from other vehicles
  • Slow down on wet roads
  • Check and replace your wiper blades
  • Use headlights in the rain
  • Avoid flooded roads and obey barricades and signs

Advice from JN Properties

  • Maintain proper drainage around properties. Clear blocked drains, culverts and gullies to allow rainwater to flow freely.
  • Inspect and reinforce structures. Examine your property for cracks and other weak points that may allow water to seep in during heavy rain.
  • Install barriers. Place sandbags at doors and at other vulnerable entry points to help prevent water from seeping in.
  • Elevate critical equipment: Appliances and important business equipment should be raised above expected flood levels.
  • Secure outdoor equipment. Move patio furniture, garden equipment, and other loose items indoors or anchor them securely to prevent them from becoming flying debris. Unsecured outdoor items can escalate minor damage into major expenses.
  • Take photographs and videos of property. Persons with insured property should take photographs and videos of buildings and contents before the storm to document the condition of the property. These can provide proof to support insurance claims if the property sustains damage.
