Step Up Disaster Preparedness as Hurricane Season Peaks

2 min read

As the Atlantic Hurricane Season reaches its most active period, Jamaicans are being urged to take proactive steps to protect their families, homes, and communities. Early preparation can make a significant difference in reducing the risks posed by tropical storms and hurricanes.

Preparedness is a shared responsibility. The more communities organise and plan ahead, the stronger our national resilience will be.

Here are five steps to take to ensure your family and community are prepared for the Hurricane season:

  1. Develop Family and Community Emergency Plans
    • Identify evacuation routes and nearest shelters.
    • Share emergency contacts with relatives and neighbors.
  2. Assemble a Disaster Supply Kit
    • Include non-perishable food, bottled water, flashlights, batteries, first aid supplies, and essential medications for at least three days.
    • Don’t forget baby supplies, pet needs, and personal hygiene items.
  3. Secure Homes and Surroundings
    • Reinforce roofs, windows, and doors.
    • Trim trees and clear drains to reduce flooding and flying debris.
  4. Protect Important Documents
    • Store passports, land titles, birth certificates, and insurance papers in waterproof containers or save digital copies.
  5. Stay Alert and Informed
    • Follow weather advisories from the Meteorological Service of Jamaica.
    • Adhere to updates and instructions issued by ODPEM and local authorities.

Designated shelters across the island are ready to provide safe refuge for residents, particularly those in flood-prone and low-lying areas. Families are also being reminded to make special arrangements for the elderly, people with disabilities, and young children in the event of relocation.

For more information on hurricane preparedness, visit www.odpem.org.jm or contact ODPEM at (876) 906-9674-5.
